Match Day 1: Champions' League 2009

Manchester United and Chelsea both began this years Champions League campaign with narrow victories, last seasons losing finalists United, faced a stiff test in Turkey versus Besiktas while in a constant downpour, Chelsea played host to Portuguese side Porto.

A well placed header from Paul Scholes made sure the English Champions took home all 3 points but they were not at their best on the night, at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea also had to wait until after the interval before Nicolas Anelka's strike wrapped up the points.

In Group A, Bayern Munich were tested by Israelis Maccabi Haifa Thomas Muller was the difference as he scored twice to seal the 3-0 win for the visitors.

In Group B, Bordeaux visited Juventus and came away with a 1-1 draw a goal from Vincento Iaquinta seemed to have wrapped up the win for the Italians, but Jaroslav Plasil had other ideas, it was his goal that secured a point for the French team.

Wolfsburg made their Champions' League debut by beating CSKA Moscow 3-1, with Brazilian player Grafite scoring a hat-trick for the German side.

In Group C, FC Zurich played host to Real Madrid and found themselves 3-0 down at half-time only to pull back two goals to give the home crowd real hope only for Real to score twice more in a 5-2 win.

Is Fernando Torres out of Spain XI?

The Euro 2008 Champions have booked their place for the World Cup and the team maybe one of the most gifted in the world, boasting three great play makers in Cesc Fabregas, Xavi and Andres Iniesta as well as one of the hottest forwards in the game in David Villa, can Fernando Torres justify his role in the side?

Despite being seen as the highest profile player for La Furia Roja, he has been struggling for form of late with only nine goals in two years for his country.

Villa has scored the same amount of goals since February. Although appearing in 22 games fewer than Torres since making his debut in 2005, Villa has netted nineteen more goals than the Liverpool forward.

In the last two World Cup qualifiers against Belgium and Estonia, Torres failed to hit the target on many an occasion, opportunities he rarely squanders at Anfield.

If he continues to miss the target for the national side then Vicente del Bosque, Spain's head coach, may be forced to change his strategy, perhaps putting an extra man in midfield, leaving Villa up front alone to spearhead the attack.

And then there's David Silva who played brilliantly last Saturday with Villa against the Belgians.

Now that their place is booked in South Africa, del Bosque will be looking to create a World Cup winning side and it may be that Torres will have to watch it happen from the subs' bench.

Duff bags the points for Fulham

Two of the three bottom teams in the Premier League met on Sunday, as Fulham hosted Everton at Craven Cottage.

The two clubs began the day with only three points apiece to start the season with only Portsmouth having recorded fewer points thus far and lying in last place.

Even now at this early point of the campaign the pressure was on for both teams, for both teams to show the type of form that pushed them both into a top seven finish last term.

After half an hour of the game the only thing of note was the number of half chances that went begging including two headers from Fulham's Clint Dempsey that both missed the target.

With 15 minutes left in the half Leighton Baines curled a free kick into the Fulham area which Tim Cahill duly slotted into the goal for an Everton lead, that they held onto until the half-time interval.

After a good period of pressure Fulham received the kind of luck they deserved when a great shot from Paul Konchesky took a wicked deflection off Sylvain Distin and flew into the Everton goal.

The Merseysiders were on the ascendancy as went looking to retake the lead until a great run from Damien Duff opened up the defence and allowed him to score Fulham's second into the top corner.

Everton nearly levelled straight away due to a piece of sloppy defending, but none of Everton's strikers could finish the job.

It finished 2-1 to Fulham, their first victory since the opening weekend of the season.

Chelsea's transfer ban

FIFA have announced that Chelsea will be banned from signing players during the next two transfer windows, due to the London club being found guilty of inducing a player to break his contract.

The ban means that the club will not be able to sign any new players until January 2011.

In the middle of all the furore is former Lens player Gael Kakuta who was adjudged to have broken his contract with the French club when he signed for Chelsea.

FIFA published a statement on it's own official website which announced the decision of the Dispute Resolution Chamber announcing huge penalties for both Chelsea Football Club and the player in question.

The statement read "The DRC has indeed found that the player breached his contract with Lens and that the breach was indeed induced by the English club."

"As a result both player and club are jointly liable to pay compensation of €780,000 to the French club."

"There will also be sporting sanctions placed on the player and the club, a restriction of 4 months on his eligibility to play in official matches has been imposed on the player and the club will be banned from registering any new players for the next two consecutive transfer windows."

Kakuta, who at just 18 years old has yet to make an appearance for the first team was the club's Academy player of the year last season.

Since signing for the club he has made a very bright start and a lot is expected of him.

Man United in new controversy

Serie 'A' club Fiorentina have made a formal complaint to FIFA concerning the Premiership clubs signing of 16 year-old defender Michele Fornasier.

Only days after United threatened legal action against French side Le Havre concerning the controversy over the signing of Paul Pogba.

According to 'The Times' La Viola have not yet finished their submission that they intend to hand to the governing body of world football and the details of the complaint that the Tuscan side have made are as yet unclear.

In a recently released statement, FIFA said that "We have been recently contacted by Italian side Fiorentina, with relation to the transfer of Michele Fornasier to the English club Manchester United."

"But no investigation has begun at this time since any relevant documentation has not been completed as yet."

By law, Italian clubs are not permitted to sign players to a contract if they are 18 years of age and it is understood that Manchester United have exploited this law in the past to sign players.

Le Havre claim that United made cash inducements to Pogba's parents to persuade him to sign for the Old Trafford club a claim that Manchester United feel confident of being found completely innocent.

The fresh claims raise fears that United will be punished similarly to Chelsea who were found guilty of inducing Gael Kakuta to break his contract.

Ronaldo and Kaka; one ambition, two different people

Real Madrid's two new superstars have admitted they won't be socialising off the pitch, although it has become apparent they have struck up an understanding on the pitch.

Cristiano Ronaldo, who enjoys socialising and hitting the town won't be joined by the reserved Brazilian. In an interview with Madrid's official website, Kaka said that "The first few days together at the club were great, because there's no linguistic problem and we have met before".

"We're both beginning to understand each other both on and off the pitch yet we do have our own personalities and interests, but we have the same ambition of bringing glory to Real Madrid".

Madrid may be accused of making something of a slow start after the high expectations that came about with every new player that they signed, but Kaka went on to say that he'll only be concerned if the team is not playing up to scratch later in the campaign.

"I would be concerned if toward the end of the season, we don't play as we really want to", "Right now we're are starting to enjoy ourselves on the pitch and we must keep adapting, we all want to win every match but at the moment must focus on getting to know each other better and understanding what the coach demands from us".

Liverpool beaten in opening game

Spurs new boy Bassong heads winner on his debut for the club in the second half to earn the victory over an ineffectual Reds' team.

Tottenham and Cameroon fullback Benoit Assou-Ekotto gave his team a deserved lead, just moments before the half-time whistle after Tom Huddlestone's free-kick came back off the Liverpool wall and the fullback unleashed a wicked shot past the Reds' stationary 'keeper Pepe Reina.

It was a moment of magic in an otherwise uneventful first half.

The second period contained a lot more goal mouth incident and action, with Tottenham the more enterprising in possession but unable to add to their score however Liverpool did level the score just before the 60 minute mark, when Gomes in the Tottenham goal clearly brought down new Liverpool defender Glen Johnson and skipper Steven Gerrard buried the penalty past the Brazilian 'keeper.

Unfortunately for Liverpool it wasn't long before Spurs retook the lead.

Luka Modric floated a perfectly weighted free-kick from 35 yards out which Bassong powerfully headed past the despairing Reina.

At the death Liverpool were sure they had a bona-fide penalty but it was waved away by Referee Phil Dowd and that may have enraged Rafa Benitez but he knew the better team won on the day.

Club or country decision for Fletcher

The Red Devil's midfielder elaborates on why he chose to play in Sunday's Community Shield, despite the decision going against Scotland manager George Burley's orders.

Who had reportedly asked every member of the squad to concentrate only on Scotland's upcoming games in the World Cup qualifiers, but the midfielder claims that if he had decided to pull out of the game on Sunday against Chelsea it would have sent him down Manchester United's pecking order.

"The Scotland manager obviously asked me about not playing but I just want to play football as often as I can", he said in an interview with the Daily Record.

"There's still a place in the United squad I'm trying to win and there's always a lot of competition for places in the United team".

The young midfielder then went on to reassure his national coach that, he had no intention of denting his chances with Scotland by playing for his club.

"I don't want to skip any games for Manchester United but I was available for selection for Scotland".

"I've got to concentrate on my club career and my international career too they both work hand in hand", Fletcher will play on Wednesday as captain in Glasgow when Scotland take on Norway.

United have no need to spend

According to Red Devils' boss Alex Ferguson Man United do not need to strengthen the squad, he asserted that the Uniteds squad is strong enough to compete and there is no reason to spend any more this summer as his side prepares for the 2009-2010 season without Carlos Tevez and Cristiano Ronaldo.

He believes they are more than strong enough to continue their domination in the domestic game and have no plans as yet to spend the cash they received from Real Madrid for Ronaldo.

He stated in an interview with the Manchester Evening News that, "We don't suddenly have to splash out to stay at the top, here at United we are working from a position of strength".

"Thanks to what has been a long-term policy of buying mostly young players who we think will become top performers in the future, I'd definitely say that we are already there".

He continued "I'm aware that some of our fans were disappointed we spend all that money on another superstar" "And I would have done that if I had felt I would be getting value for money but during the summer a lot of crazy stuff happened and the prices for top players went through the roof".

"We believed that it wasn't realistic and so we held off", "Over the years we have shown that we spend big when we have to and have broken a few transfer records ourselves but the prices being asked for just did not add up for us".

Final of the Peace Cup

Final of the Peace Cup. After ending in a goalless stalemate, who excelled and who failed to impress.

Aston Villa and Juventus went to penalties on Sunday night with Villa sneaking the win from the spot, but who impressed on the pitch and who shouldn't have bothered making the trip.

Marc Albrighton, Aston Villa midfielder, a Player of the Tournament performance from the 19 year-old, running at the Juventus defence all night, making chance after chance.

Aston Villa's Spanish defender Carlos Cuellar, ensuring that the club will not miss the recently retired Martin Laursen, as he showed once again he is the leader of the defence alongside the ever improving Curtis Davies.

Veteran midfielder Mauro Camoranesi of Juventus, yet again he was tireless as he was everywhere on the pitch, whenever he was needed, he is one more candidate for the Player of the Tournament.

Felipe Melo of Juventus, he may have only just signed for Juve but he plays like a veteran in their midfield.

Aston Villa forward John Carew, had one long range attempt and that was about it as he let Juve's defence think they'd had a quiet night.

Juventus forward David Trezeguet, the Frenchman missed an easy chance that should have clinched the game for the Italians.

John Terry: Fully committed to Chelsea

The Blues captain John Terry reiterated his dedication to the Stamford Bridge team.

After beating Club America on Sunday evening in the World Football Challenge by a score of 2-0, he gave an interview that focused on both his and the team's future.

Despite releasing a statement before the game that declared his continuing loyalty to the team, the captain of both club and country felt it was important to reassure Chelsea fans that he was remaining at the club and that any offer from Manchester City would not have tempted him away from Stamford Bridge.

"Listen, from day one, when I received the phone call from Peter Kenyon when I was away on holiday and he told me that Man City had put in an offer for me, they said they didn't want to sell me and I didn't want to leave".

When he was asked by Sky Sports why he had taken this long to release a statement, he answered, "I wanted assurance that players such as Ashley Cole and Didier Drogba, who are in talks about their contracts right now as well Frank Lampard, will be staying with Chelsea".

The centre-back continued by saying he would like to stay with Chelsae until he hangs up his boots, "I've been at the club now for fourteen years and it's very strange because no team has ever put a bid in for me before".

He also stated that the fans at The Bridge played a major role in his decision to stay, "of course they play a massive part because I have a great relationship with them and hopefully it'll go on and on".

Beckham confronts disgruntled fans

David Beckham was involved in an angry confrontation with LA Galaxy fans during his first home game this season, the 34 year old ex-Manchester United and Real Madrid midfielder had been on loan at AC Milan forcing him to miss the first half of the MLS season and he was booed and jeered by large sections of the sell-out crowd throughout Sunday's friendly, ironically against Milan.

"Most of the fans have been great, it was only one or two that, you know, it was to be expected" he insisted afterwards, "i tried to shake one of the guys hands but he didn't want any of it", the boos drowned out the sound of any cheers as he and the rest of the LA Galaxy squad were introduced to the 27,000 capacity crowd.

Security had to escort him from the field at half-time as he walked past an area of jeering fans, one supporter jumped down from the stands and had to be restrained before being taken away, Galaxy head coach, Bruce Arena tried his best to play down the reception that Beckham received.

"We regret the incident that occurred at the end of the first-half" he said, "while it is important that our fans remain free to voice their opinions, they must do so in an appropriate manner", the game marked the end of a turbulent week for the ex-England captain.

After he responded to accusations from Galaxy captain Landon Donovan that he was unprofessional, the match itself ended in a 2-2 draw, Beckham having a hand in both Galaxy goals, a trademark cross-field ball by Beckham to Donovan who then set up Alan Gordon to score the first.

While for the second and with Galaxy down 2-1, it was his corner that was headed home by Bryan Jordan, he then turned to a section of the crowd that had been especially vociferous and simply shrugged his shoulders, while he did applaud those fans who had remained supportive when he was withdrawn in the 75th minute.

Emmanuel Adebayor

Emmanuel Adebayor insists he's not at City for the money, the Togolese forward said his move north is based on football and not financial reasons.

Emmanuel Adebayor, who left Arsenal for Manchester City on Sunday for a reported £25 million, has asserted it wasn't the lucrative wage packet that prompted him to move clubs, "people who say I have joined City just for the money are wrong" he stated.

"If that had been my reason for moving then I would have been playing for Barcelona or Milan last season", on City's official website he insisted "They gave me bigger offers than Arsenal did for me to stay", "I'm impressed by the ambitions of the club and that's why I'm here".

"This club is aiming to be one of the biggest in the world and I want to be a part of that", the Togolese hit man feels that a glittering era is just around the corner for 'The Citizens' and can break into the lucrative Champions' League places this season, "We have everything we need here. Why can't we do that this year?".

He added that "Now is better than in two or three years", "the Chairman, in fact everyone at City want this club to be one of the best in the world", "we will all fight to achieve that. I want to win silverware and trophies. That is my ambition".

"The team has got a lot of quality throughout and has a manager who knows what he wants", "I want to show how I can help. everyone has shown me such great respect", "when you sign for a new club, you want to feel at home as quick as possible and I do. I am happy to be here", "the fans were just fantastic to me when I arrived".

United need Eto'o says Venables

United need Eto'o says Venables, the ex-England manager and former Barcelona boss believes United need to sign the Cameroon striker to stay in touch with cross-town rivals City.

Venables has stated that United boss Alex Ferguson would be wise to retract an earlier statement that his summer spending has ceased and put a deal together that would bring the Barcelona striker to the Old Trafford club, who may be in the midst of a swap deal along with Internazionale striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Venables has said that Manchester United's squad will still need further strengthening, after the loss of Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez which would have seriously weakened the squad, by securing the signature of Eto'o, Ferguson could exact revenge on City boss Mark Hughes after he signed Tevez.

In his column for The Sun, Venables wrote, "Ferguson will be at Wembley again next month for the Community Shield" "and if he's not too busy next weekend he might be a good idea for him to visit the Arch", "he could pay a visit to the Wembley Cup featuring Tottenham, Celtic, Al-Ahly and Barcelona"

"Alex will see not just some great football", "he may also get to see a possible solution to United's summer discontent" "and yes his name is Samuel Eto'o. The same one who scored against United in last May's Champions' League final".

"Yes the same Eto'o that has been courted by Manchester City, the same Eto'o that has scored 108 goals in five years for Barcelona", "I believe Eto'o can fill the void left by the shattering departures of Ronaldo and Tevez", "he might not have all that keen on a move to City but United might prove a more attractive prospect", "Manchester City want to be a force in Europe but United already are" he concluded.

Andrew Flintoff To Retire From Test Cricket

Flintoff calls test career to an end, fitness problems prompt Flintoff to end Test cricket career, the sheer number of injuries that he has suffered over recent years have finally taken their toll, his plan is to play the current Ashes series against Australia and then concentrate solely on the one day game.

"It's something I've been thinking of for some time, if you'll excuse the pun, this is isn't a knee-jerk reaction", "Seeing the surgeon on Monday and having more jabs in it, my body is telling me to give in", "This is for my own sanity, I've spent two out of the last four years just doing rehabilitation", "There's four test matches left and I will obviously give my utmost for England and an Ashes victory".

A final decision on whether he has recovered from his latest knee injury won't be made until Thursday morning, the day of the second test, "I've bowled a few overs" he added "And I'll bowl a few more before the team is announced in the morning".

The 31 year-old Lancashire all-rounder felt he had to make his decision public to help him perform better in the Ashes, "I just think the time now is right and I needed to get it out there and tell everyone what my intentions are", "Over the next few weeks I will do all I can to get out on the Cricket field".

Flintoff's finest hour came in the 2005 Ashes when he starred with both bat and ball as England ended their 18 year drought against Australia, he says that he hasn't yet given up hope of history repeating itself.

"It was a special group of cricketers" he recalled, "We were all confident of doing something very special", "Standing on the podium after the last match is something I'll never forget, I hope I can do that again", "You have one-day cricket and Twenty20 but the Ashes is the ultimate".

Alex Ferguson wishes the best for Ronaldo

Alex Ferguson wishes the best for Ronaldo, he spent all of last season insisting that he wouldn't let Ronaldo go but the United boss did eventually bow to the inevitable and Ronaldo was on his way to the Bernabeu for a world record £80million, it ended a six year association with the Old Trafford team.

A period of time that saw Ronaldo transformed from a raw teenager to being voted the best player in the world, to lose a player of such talent may leave Ferguson justifiably disappointed, but 24 year old Ronaldo heads for Spain with his best wishes.

"I had a good relationship with the boy but never, ever thought we would keep him for a long time", "We are very proud and pleased to have had him at Manchester United for six years", "He has had this opportunity to take another challenge and I respect him for that", "Ronaldo was such a fantastic player for us and a good lad and gave us no problems. We wish him well".

However, having the cash and spending it have become two very different things for Ferguson and the team, they were keen to lure Karim Benzema away from Lyon only to find Real's open cheque book had snatched him away, all of which led to United's shock move for Michael Owen, plus the addition of Gabriel Obertan from Bordeaux and Antonio Valencia from Wigan.

"That is the end of our business" Ferguson stated, claiming his summer dealings are over, however if anyone believes that United won't be competitive next season should be aware.

Ferguson has stated that young players such as Danny Welbeck and Federico Macheda will have an impact at the highest level, "we have a very good squad for next year, we are going to be very strong".

The Treble is the target for Kaka and Real Madrid, Los Blancos' summer signing outlines ambitions for the club, due to the massive Reconstruction of the squad over the summer, Real Madrid are expected to struggle to gel, but Kaka, who cost the club €67.5 million believes there is no excuse for failure this season.

The Brazilian play maker warned their rivals that Los Blancos will be doing everything in their power to win every trophy available in 2009-2010, "My dream is to win Madrid's tenth Champions League trophy", "But I know that competition will be the hardest one to win" he told Marca.

He also admitted that stopping Barcelona in the Primera Division will be equally difficult, "Barca deserved to win everything they did last season", he affirmed that "To eclipse them we will have to play at our very best", "to be honest I'd rather win the Treble for Real than pick up the Ballon d'Or for myself again".

The 27 year old also said that he and Cristiano Ronaldo, are worth the massive amount of money that Madrid paid for them this summer, he continued by praising the newly formed Galacticos, as well as those who could yet arrive.

"Benzema has a very bright future and Cristiano is just out of this world", as for rumoured signing Franck Ribery, he said "It's always a pleasure to watch him play", finally he said that he's not afraid of the gossip he may read about himself, "i don't go out at night so I don't have to be afraid of the paparazzi".

Bafana Bafana

Late Brazil goal breaks Bafana Bafana hearts, Samba stars progress to final to face giant-killers USA, the Host Nation were defeated by a goal from a Daniel Alves set piece

Despite being clear underdogs, South Africa showed no signs of tension or intimidation in facing Brazil, blowing on their vuvuzelas throughout, the crowd's confidence equalled the team's.

South Africa's defence battled throughout and contained Brazil's attacks for far longer than anticipated, Steven Pienaar in particular shone as he constantly put his body on the line in defence and often joined South Africa's attacking moves although Kaka and Maicon constantly tested the defence they were frustrated by a series of astute tackles and well-timed interceptions.

Although Pienaar played brilliantly, Kaka put on too strong a performance, Kaka was growing into the game slowly with bursts from midfield and series of shots on goal, but his chances were foiled either by goalkeeper Itumuleng Khune or the defence, a brilliant save by Cesar denied The Boys a great chance during the second half.

Brazilian manager Dunga seemed confident his side would make a breakthrough, it wasn't until ten minutes remained in the game before he made a change to the line-up, he appeared to be relying on the brilliance of Robinho, Luis Fabiano and Kaka to make the difference.

One substitue that came on in those last ten minutes was Barcelona fullback Daniel Alves and it was that substitution that made all the difference in the game, he broke Bafana hearts by curling a sweetly-struck free-kick into the net, with only four minutes remaining, the dream of a shock result was broken.
